Objective of Course

Heat transfer is the science that seeks to predict the energy transfer that may take place between material bodies as a result of a temperature difference.

The science of heat transfer seeks not merely to explain how heat energy may be transferred, but also to predict the rate at which the exchange will take place under certain specified conditions.

Most readers will be familiar with the terms used to denote the three modes of heat transfer: conductionconvection, and radiation. In this course we seek to explain the mechanism of these modes qualitatively so that each may be considered in its proper perspective.

Rather than relying on symbolic manipulations, the field of numerical analysis examines algorithms that provide approximations to mathematical problems using numerical values (as distinguished from discrete mathematics). Rather of seeking for the precise answers to issues, this field of research focuses on numerical approaches that aim to obtain approximations. Nowadays, numerical analysis is used not just in the traditional academic disciplines of engineering and the physical sciences, but also in the social sciences, humanities, medicine, business, and even the arts. As computational power continues to rise, more intricate numerical analysis may be used to create mathematical models that are both detailed and realistic for use in research and engineering. Ordinary differential equations (used in astronomy to predict the movements of planets, stars, and galaxies), numerical linear algebra (used in data analysis), stochastic differential equations (used in medicine and biology to simulate the behavior of cells), and Markov chains are all examples of numerical analysis.

In the absence of contemporary computers, numerical approaches often made use of hand-interpolation formulae derived from extensive printed tables of data. Since the middle of the 20th century, computers have been employed to calculate the necessary functions, although many of the same formulae are still in use in software programs today.

The numerical perspective may be traced all the way back to the very oldest mathematical texts. In keeping with this lengthy heritage, numerical analysis employs approximate solutions within predetermined error boundaries rather than providing accurate symbolic answers translated into numbers that are relevant solely to observable phenomena.
