Power generation plants are systems that converts the energy source into mechanical and further into electrical form. Such conversion system is based on the turbo-generator set, which is a combination of turbine connected (directly) to an electrical generator for the generation of electric power. The main plant components are turbine, cooler, pumps or compressors, heat generators or head pressurizer, energy source, and many other auxiliaries required to improve plant performance. The types of turbines are steam, gas, water and wind turbines. All of these turbines work on the same principle, where the working fluid entry under specific conditions spins the output shaft.

Applications of solar energy for air and water heating, desalination, cooking, refrigeration and electric power generation are all explained extensively with illustrations and examples. Other solar energy sources are also explained, namely, wind energy, biomass, hydropower and geothermal energy.
